Omnibus Bills

I Will Never Vote For An Omnibus Bill I Have Not Read and Understood!

An omnibus bill is a single, large legislative document that combines many separate and diverse measures, subjects, or spending bills into one package for a single up-or-down vote.

The infamous massive mega-omnibus (“omnibus prime”) bill passed at the very end of the 2024 Minnesota legislative session was 1,430 to 1,431 pages long.

The Event: Passed by DFL majorities in the final hours of the May 2024 session amidst chaotic floor protests from Republicans.

What it Did: Combined at least 9 to 11 different topic areas—transforming a standalone tax bill into a catch-all package covering housing, transportation, labor, energy, taxes, and policy measures.

If this much legislation is need and there is no time, then maybe we need a session every year to get the work done. No one had time to read the 1,431 pages of legislation before the vote!
